You can save some money through purchasing a convertible baby crib, which later makes a toddler and day bed.
Another helpful little piece of furniture is a bassinet. This will allow you to promote regular napping without requiring your child to always sleep in the crib. With a bassinet, it can be where you are... Which means your newborn can be close should they need you. They are also light and portable, which means that they can move with you, should you need it in different areas of the house.
You will find this next item is more or less the law than it is personal preference. You have to have a car seat before your child can come home from the hospital. Most medical facilities require some staff member to check out the security of a baby in a car seat before they are allowed to leave the premises. So there is no mistake that this is an important purchase. I like the look and function of a Britax car seat, although some other top rated models are made by: Graco, Cosco and Evenflo.
Finally, the last thing on the list is a stroller. This is what I call an energy saving device. While your child might not be all that heavy initially, they will be. And unless you want to carry them everywhere, you should invest in something that you both will enjoy. They get to ride in style, and all you have to do is propel them forward. While there are many styles and designs available that are sure to catch your eye, I personally rather enjoy the simplicity and style of a Perego stroller.

Want something padded/comfy for my little man, and the most important..something safe! My son was a preemie, has always been long & slim..so something with plenty of leg room! The MyRide 65 is the better choice.
The Evenflo only rear faces to 30 pounds, the Graco goes to 40.
The Evenflo only is a 5 point harness until 40 pounds, Graco is 65 pounds.
The Evenflo becomes a booster seat, but most kids should be harnessed longer, and then a seperate booster can be purchased..
The Graco is cheaper by $65, you can buy a really decent booster when the time comes for that amount of $$.
Rear facing longer than 1 year and 20 pounds is safer, and from the driving situations you describe, that would be your best bet. The seat actually cushions and supports their fragile necks and heads. Forward facing kids at 20 pounds get severe whiplash and even broken necks in crashes.
Edited to add... Car seats have a life span of 6 years. The components can degrade over time from the heat and cold of being in cars all year round. Most 3 in 1 car seats like the Evenflo expire before you ever get to use them in all their modes (and before the kids are ready to be car seat free)
