Child Safety
First off, let’s think about why you are concerned about the safety of your child. Exactly what is it that you want to protect them from? From pain; would that be emotional, physical or both? Maybe you want to protect them from death? It is interesting but for some reason most people think a child needs to outlive their parents? Is there something wrong with dying?
Somewhere deep in most of us is the desire to protect and keep our children safe. In some areas we probably do a good job and then in other areas we likely do not do enough while in still other areas we take it to far.
Most of us realize that safety in a vehicle is a big issue. We spend loads of money on car seats and other items to keep your child safe and protected when traveling. Years of time and research has gone into promoting child safety in vehicles. Money and lots of effort have gone into designing and building car seats for kids that will protect them. But is your car seat safe enough, will it really protect your child. Not all seats are built the same. For example some companies only meet the minimum requirements while others like the Recaro Start seat are built well above the minimum safety standards. So is your child really safe in the seat you got them?
Consider now the safety devices around the house for you child. How about the draw and cupboard safety gadgets that make it “impossible” for the child to get into the knives and chemicals in kitchens and bathrooms; do they really keep your kids out? There are also safety gates to keep kids out but might cause you to trip and throw your back out. Safety for one does not always mean safety for all.
Have you considered the safety impact food can have on your child? Sure you do not feed the infant a nut, or a hard candy, at least we are told it is not safe. What about something simple like popcorn? Sure you say you have to be careful or you do not feed it to the infant or toddler. But that is not enough, many babies have died because they found a piece of popcorn under the table or in some other odd place and chocked to death on it. Just when you though you had considered all the options there is something else that will jump up and get you.
