Safest Convertible Car Seats – 5 Important Reasons Why Britax Is the First Choice For Most Parents
A convertible car seat is the most popular choice for many parents because of its versatility. Offering both front and rear facing opportunities, it can be used for both infants and toddlers. But the biggest problem facing most parents is where to go to find the safest convertible car seats?
So where is the best place to begin your search? Well why not start with the company that has been the pioneer in child passenger safety for over thirty five years. This is how long Britax has led the way in innovation that others have later taken on board in their designs.
Let's consider 5 specific aspects that have given Britax the reputation as the number one manufacturer of child's car seats around the world.
Background
It is the 35 years that Britax has dedicated to innovation, that has made them the most trusted manufacturer and the best seller of child car seats in both the USA and Europe. As the cliché goes – where Britax leads, others follow.
Safety Standards
Britax commitment to improving child safety, through research, design and testing, is unparalleled. Seats are designed to exceed all government safety standards. Furthermore, with their own crash test facilities in USA, Europe and Australia they can certify to the most stringent requirements, globally.
Energy Management
It is the energy forces generated by a crash that do all the damage. So, Britax has incorporated important design features into all its seats, to divert these forces away from the child and so minimise injury. You cannot destroy those energy forces but you can limit their effect on your child.
Fit and Comfort
It is vital that the seat fits both your child and the car, so Britax seats incorporate features that ensure that both are optimised. In addition, your child is guaranteed the most comfortable ride through additional features such as (a) customised head restraint and harness height adjustment (b) high density foam lining to back and seating area which gives extra padding as well as higher energy absorption.
Ease of Installation and Use
If the seat is easy to install and use, it is most likely to be correctly fitted every time. So, specific design features ensure that ease of installation is maximised. This applies to the securing and release of seats and adjusting the safety harness for best fit.
The above applies to all types of car seats and to convertible car seats in particular, as they are used over a much longer time period.
You cannot guarantee not to be involved in an accident but you can make the best provision for your child's safety. It is surely a priority for all parents to find the safest possible car seat. So, if the convertible type is your choice, then don't compromise on safety.
This brings us back to the original question … where can you go to find the safest convertible car seats? Answer – it must be Britax.

Frequently Asked Questions...
Does American Airlines require a car seat or restraint device for 4 year olds?
I'm planning to travel to Texas this Christmas on American Airlines, and I have a 4 year old daughter. Obviously, she still sits in a child seat in the car, but is she required to in an airplane?
Answer:
Car seats are never required but always a good idea.
I'm a former Flight Attendant and I bring my 5 year old's car seat on the plane with us when we fly. Why? Checking a car seat is a bad idea. It can easily be lost and/or broken in transit. Children are also calmer and sleep better in their familiar seat.
If you use it on board, it will not count against your carry-on. It must be FAA approved but almost all 5 point harnessed seats sold in the U.S. are. The FAA also allows car seats to be used as long as the child still fits it (our seat goes to about age 6).

Booster seats, or any seats which need a shoulder belt, are not allowed, including seats which "convert". Just to give an example, the Graco Nautilus is only approved when using the internal harness.

There is a car seat alternative, the "restraint device" you may have been referring to. The CARES harness pictured above is useful is you do not need to bring your car seat with you (i.e. someone has one you can use in Texas). They can be bought or rented on Ebay and Craigslist. Again, this item makes the flight safer but is not required.
For more information, nine years ago I wrote an article on this subject. It's based on both my personal and professional experience of flying with children. There's a whole section on getting car seats through airports. It's totally non-commercial and other parents from around the world have contributed;

She's a good age to fly. They usually love it and are easy.
Have a good Xmas in Texas!
